This week, I sat down with physician, researcher, and New York Times best-selling author, Dr. Jason Fung to talk about one of my favorite subjects: Fasting. We don’t waste any time and dive headfirst into the many health benefits of fasting - both physically for gut health, inflammation, and weight loss, and mentally as a self-healing tool. We take a look back and see just how far removed we’ve become from our ancestors' health habits, how that’s translated into our modern day eating patterns and health problems, and how to reestablish our ancient relationship with food. Whatever you want to know about fasting, whether that’s losing weight (or not!), what to eat when not fasting, or the various ways fasting can affect people, this fasting deep dive is the episode you’ve been waiting for.

Dr. Jason Fung is a physician (kidney specialist), researcher and New York Times best-selling author currently practicing in Toronto, Canada. trained in Los Angeles and Toronto and currently practices as a nephrologist (kidney specialist). His books, including The Obesity Code, The Complete Guide to Fasting, The Diabetes Code and The Cancer Code have challenged conventional thinking about these diseases, and introduces dietary strategies to manage them. He is the co-founder of The Fasting Method (www.TheFastingMethod.com), which provides the education, tools and community needed to successfully implement intermittent fasting.

A few of my favorite things we cover this episode:

  • How dietary fasting can be used as a self-healing tool and breaking down some of the common misconceptions surrounding fasting dogma
  • How we’ve progressively removed ourselves from our ancestral health habits and how this has affected our modern day nutrition
  • How our gut microbiome can benefit through implementing fasting into our dietary routine (even if you’re not looking to lose weight!)
  • Some of Dr. Fung’s recommended foods to utilize when breaking a fast
  • A look into why our hormones may be affecting each of our fasting journeys differently
