The Plant-Based Keto Beverage That Will Elevate Your Ketotarian Lifestyle
This post was made in collaboration with Medlie but all thoughts and opinions are my own.
Functional medicine believes food is foundational for optimal health. The trajectory of your health starts with the foods you choose to eat every single day. It’s no secret that vegetables are some of the most nutrient dense foods out there and it would be difficult to argue that you shouldn’t have more vegetables in your diet. In fact, most of us would benefit from eating a lot more than we currently do.
My book Ketotarian, is all about how to do the conventional ketogenic diet completely plant-based with vegan, vegetarian, and pescatarian options. I’ve seen firsthand just how powerful plant foods can be for healing. The benefits of vegetables are far-reaching.

1. Detoxification
In our modern-day society, we come across a multitude of toxins on a daily basis but our genetics have not caught up. Since it’s impossible to avoid toxins all together as even our best efforts fall short, it’s essential to optimize our bodies own detoxification system. And what better way through food.
Vegetables are next level detoxifiers. In fact, plants contain certain antioxidant phytonutrients, phytochelatins, and metallothioneins that work to bind to heavy metals. Additionally, sulfuric vegetables like broccoli and Brussels sprouts and dark leafy greens like kale and spinach work to support your body’s methylation pathways that help to control detoxification.
2. Reduced inflammation
Chronic inflammation that never goes away is often the fuel to the fire of almost all of the health problems I see in my clinic. The polyphenols found in vegetables, fruits, and spices work to drive down the inflammatory NF-kB pathway and activate the anti-inflammatory Nrf-2. Some of these vegetables and plant medicines include ginger, turmeric, and L-sulforaphane found in broccoli.
3. Lowered blood sugar
Many studies have shown the benefit of mostly plant-based diets for reduced blood sugar. One long-term study even showed that over a span of 19 years, replacing just 1 percent of calories from animal protein with plant protein lowered diabetes risk in men by 18 percent.
4. Enhanced microbiome health
A healthy microbiome produces short-chain fatty acids SCFAs through fermenting the fiber in your colon – and plants contain a lot of fiber. Butyrate is one of the main SCFAs in your body and works to boost the health of your gut and has been shown to improve ulcerative colitis, Crohn’s disease, and irritable bowel syndrome.
Those are just a few of the benefits of including more plants into your life. Even if I haven’t convinced you to go full-on Ketotarian, we can’t argue the importance of upping our vegetable intake. Whether you choose to be completely plant-based or looking for a way to easily add vegetables into your life there are foods on the market that make it simpler than ever.
As I travel a lot for work and consult patients throughout the day when I am home, convenience is important to me while also staying true to my Ketotarian principles. I also hear from my patients that they need an easy way to get more vegetables into their diet without having to spend more time in the kitchen meal prepping or packing around a ton of food on the go – but not wanting to sacrifice taste or quality – which you shouldn’t have to.
Medlie is my favorite way to get in high-quality plant-foods into my diet in one delicious beverage. What makes them different from any other vegetable drink on the market is their entire process from farm to bottle. By picking their vegetables at the peak of ripeness from the nearest farm possible, they are laying the foundation for freshness and taste.
Then once the vegetables arrive at the facility, their processing procedure ensures the nutritional quality of each bottle. Instead of heat pasteurizing, they instead use a procedure called high-pressure processing which maintains the nutritional integrity of the foods as they don’t have to be heated first in order to kill the potentially bad bacteria.
HPP utilizes elevated pressures rather than heat to starve off the bad bacteria. While heat pasteurization isn’t bad, we can’t guarantee it isn’t also killing off some of the good bacteria as well. If you are going to eat more vegetables you want as many phytonutrients, vitamins, and fiber as you can get. Plus, Medlie blends the entire vegetable – peel and seeds included to get even more nutritional power with each sip.
Medlie is the perfect choice for anyone since pretty much anyone can enjoy their flavors as they are all dairy-free, gluten-free, soy and corn-free, kosher compliant, ketotarian-approved, as well as being free from preservatives, sweeteners, and other additives – all delivered right to your door.
And to top it all off, they just released their Keto Collection. They are a Ketotarian-lovers dream with two delicious flavors, Kale Avocado and Coconut Mint. Each are packed with plant-based healthy fats like avocado and coconut, clean grass-fed collagen protein, and low-carb veggies like cauliflower, celery, spinach, and kale.
