I've been holding this conversation for a while — not because I wasn't sure it was important, but because I wanted to come to it with more than alarm. This Health Hot Take is the result of that.
AI data centers are not an abstract technology story. They are physical facilities that are cropping up in backyards across the United States, using the same amount of electricity as entire cities, consuming over 200 billion gallons of water annually, and emitting levels of electromagnetic pollution that we have no historical precedent for. Beekeepers are reporting colony collapse near these sites. Farmers are reporting infertile livestock and stillbirths. None of this has randomized controlled trials behind it yet — because it's happening in real time — but the directional evidence, layered on 16 years of asking telehealth patients about their proximity to cell towers, power lines, and Wi-Fi routers, is not subtle.
The EMF conversation is the practical health piece. But what I really want people to understand is the philosophical architecture underneath all of this — because it explains why there's no meaningful pause being considered, and why the people building this seem almost compulsively committed to acceleration regardless of the consequences.
At the end of the 19th century, a Russian philosopher named Nikolai Fyodorov believed that it was humanity's moral obligation to use science and technology to gather the atoms of our ancestors and bring about the resurrection of the dead — a techno-religious fusion of science and apocalyptic theology. That worldview, filtered through a 1990s British philosopher named Nick Land at Warwick University, became what's now called accelerationism and the dark enlightenment. Nick Land has written openly about channeling non-human entities he calls Lemurian demons through numerical systems — and his ideas have documented connections to Marc Andreessen, Peter Thiel, Sam Altman, and Elon Musk. Peter Thiel discusses the Antichrist and end times openly with the New York Times. This is not fringe. This is the worldview driving the acceleration of AI.
I'm not saying stop using ChatGPT or throw your Oura Ring in the trash. AI in the functional medicine space — for organizing records, for clinical research, for wearables — has real utility. But the grand project of AI is something different from that, and the people behind it have already hedged: they've used AI to identify the least disaster-prone bunker locations in the world. New Zealand, if you're curious. They'll be fine. The question is whether the rest of us will, and whether we're paying attention at the speed this is moving.
A few of my favorite things we cover in this episode:
- AI data centers use the same electricity as entire cities — and 6% of total US electricity — with no signs of slowing, and three-quarters of the dirtiest electricity centers in the US are within 50 miles of large data centers
- EMF emissions from data centers: farmers reporting bee colony collapse, infertile livestock, and stillbirths — all anecdotal but directionally alarming when layered on what we already know about man-made polarized EMFs
- EMF-sensitive patients experience inflammation, autoimmune flares, hormonal disruption, anxiety, brain fog, fatigue, nausea — the same symptom cluster Dr. Cole has been asking about in telehealth for 16 years
- Over 200 billion gallons of water consumed annually by AI data centers — plus particulate air pollution from the facilities themselves
- The Dark Enlightenment: how a 19th century Russian philosopher (Nikolai Fyodorov), who believed humanity had a moral obligation to use science to resurrect the dead, informed a British philosopher named Nick Land, who became the intellectual godfather of accelerationism
- Nick Land — "godfather of accelerationism" — channels what he calls Lemurian demons from other dimensions through a numagram and believes AI is the vehicle for non-human entities to inhabit physical form
- People like Marc Andreessen, Peter Thiel, Sam Altman, and Elon Musk all have documented connections to accelerationist thinking — Peter Thiel speaks openly to the New York Times about the Antichrist and end times
- The singularity: when AI surpasses human intelligence — and why the billionaires behind it have already used AI to identify the safest bunker locations (New Zealand) for when it all goes wrong
- Universal basic income as the accelerationist plan — AI takes your job, they pay you to exist, and techno-authoritarianism follows
- Both AOC/Bernie Sanders and Tucker Carlson are calling for pause — this is a rare moment of bipartisan alarm that deserves attention
- Practical EMF mitigation: grounding, swimming in natural water, forest bathing, phone out of the bedroom, bedroom breaker off at night, Faraday cage, Faraday bags, ethernet over Wi-Fi, wired headphones
- Bee stewardship: plant native flowers, don't spray pesticides or herbicides, put out water in heat waves, let dandelions grow — 1 in 3 bites of food depends on bees
- Show up to town hall meetings — the only places where data center expansion has been stopped is where people showed up
