The Truth About Parasite Cleanses: Benefits, Risks + How To Know If You Actually Need To Do One

It seems like there is some sort of cleanse for everything. Whether you want to rid yourself of heavy metals, microplastics, or general toxins, there are cleanses and detoxes out there promising dramatic results.

As a functional medicine expert, I hear a lot about parasite cleanses, due to the fact that parasite infections are something I see often with my patients. Therefore, many people coming to me have either already tried a parasite cleanse or are desperately inquiring if it will actually kill off these attackers and finally alleviate their symptoms.

But with most things in health, it’s not that straightforward. Parasite cleanses have a lot of nuance and to be frank, the ones on the market aren’t always what they are cracked up to be — whether they are oversimplified, aren’t getting the science right, or just plain over promising.

It’s time we cut the confusion. Let’s take a look at what a parasite cleanse is and what it isn’t, who could benefit from one, and exactly what you should look for when choosing a parasite cleanse for your case.

Understanding parasites

Before we determine if a parasite cleanse is right for you, we have to better understand parasites themselves. Parasitic infections are not a one-size-fits all. There are multiple categories of parasites, each with hundreds if not thousands of different varieties with their own mode of infection and resulting symptoms:

  • Helminths: When most people think about parasites, they are actually thinking of helminths. These are tiny, visible worms that live inside of your digestive tract and include tapeworms, flukes, flatworms, and roundworm varieties like whipworms, hookworms, and pinworms. If left unaddressed, they can lead to chronic health problems as they deplete your body’s own resources.
  • Protozoa: In reality, this type of parasitic infection is actually what I see most often in my telehealth functional medicine clinic. This insidious single-celled parasite can end up contributing to acute and potentially long-term health health issues as they are more difficult to identify due to their microscopic nature. Most people become infected through contaminated food, water, undercooked meat, or insects. One of the more common forms of food poisoning is actually due to an infection with the clostridia parasite.
  • Ectoparasites: These parasites are characterized by the fact that they don’t live inside of us and instead infect us through bites on our skin. Examples include ticks, mites, lice, bed bugs, and fleas. While most cases only result in uncomfortable topical symptoms, others (like tick bites) can lead to chronic health conditions such as Lyme disease.

What are the signs your body has parasites?

One of the biggest problems with parasites is that it isn’t always obvious when someone has one. Because helminths can be visible through stool, they are one of the easiest to identify. However, the longer a person has struggled with symptoms the more difficult it is to nail it down to a parasitic infection — especially when you consider the fact that symptoms of parasitic infections tend to mimic other long term health problems. Some of the initial signs of an acute infection include:

  • Stomach pain and cramping
  • Diarrhea
  • Constipation
  • Bloating
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Fever
  • Fatigue
  • Weight loss
  • Skin rashes
  • Itching
  • Joint pain
  • Muscle aches

But since multiple chronic conditions have been linked to chronic parasitic infections, this is why a comprehensive health history alongside targeted lab work is so vital to determine the root cause behind your health problems before assuming you need to try a parasite cleanse.

What is a parasite cleanse?

If you have determined that parasites are behind your symptoms, it’s easy to want to rush into the first cleanse promising to flush these invaders out of your system. However, just like parasitic infections themselves, no two parasite cleanses are exactly the same. Unfortunately, most are based on trends rather than science-backed research.

Generally though, a parasite cleanse just refers to a system designed to flush parasites out of your body through various supplements, dietary protocols, and other detox-related products like teas or laxatives.

As a functional medicine practitioner, I do understand bioindividuality and that there isn’t going to be a set parasite cleanse that is going to work for every single person with any type of parasite infection. But with that said, there are multiple dietary changes, foods that kill parasites, herbal supplements, and other therapies that have been clinically proven to target, kill-off, and rid the body of parasites — it ultimately comes down to dosing and finding what combination of these proven therapies works for your specific case.

Choosing the right parasite cleanse for you

I also understand that not every person can work directly with a functional medicine practitioner, but many people do know that they have been exposed to a parasite infection in the past that could be contributing to their symptoms. That’s why I put together Dr. Will Cole Reset: The Parasite Cleanse, to bring the highest-quality sourced herbal remedies backed by the latest in clinical research into a single collection.

When it comes to addressing a chronic parasite infection, the goal isn’t simply to go after the parasites themselves, it’s to create the right conditions for your body to effectively eliminate them without overwhelm. That’s why the Dr. Will Cole Reset: The Parasite Cleanse is designed as a strategic three-part process:

  1. Break through biofilm
  2. Target the organisms
  3. Bind and clear what’s released

To achieve this, the cleanse is divided into three distinct phases, over the course of 4 months:

Phase 1

This preparatory phase is designed to help support inflammation levels, gut function, detoxification, overall resilience, and begin binding and clearing circulating biotoxins so your body is better equipped to handle what comes next. Since biofilms can act as a protective environment for unwanted parasites, addressing these areas first can help make them more susceptible to the antiparasitic and antimicrobial compounds we’ll be introducing in Phase 2.

Phase 2

This is where we begin introducing targeted antiparasitic and antimicrobial support. By this stage, we have already focused on preparing the body by supporting detoxification pathways, promoting healthy elimination, and beginning to address biofilm barriers. This foundational work helps create a more supportive environment for targeted protocols and may allow the antiparasitic and antimicrobial agents to work more effectively.

Phase 3

This phase brings us back to the foundational support from Phase 1 to help round out the protocol and support continued clearing. After introducing targeted antiparasitic and antimicrobial compounds in Phase 2, returning to this supportive foundation gives the body additional time to process and eliminate what has been mobilized. Continuing to support detoxification, gut function, inflammation balance, and healthy elimination can help ensure that unwanted compounds and byproducts continue moving out of the body rather than lingering in circulation.

The Binder supplement is especially important during this phase, as it can help capture and bind circulating biotoxins and other unwanted compounds that may have been released or mobilized during Phase 2, supporting their elimination through the gastrointestinal tract. This final phase helps consolidate the work of the protocol while providing continued foundational support as the body returns to a more balanced state.

Dr. Will Cole Reset: The Parasite Cleanse Supplements

In addition to including powerful anti-parasitic and antimicrobial compounds, since parasite infections often compromise the gut and lead to chronic inflammation (the common denominators in almost every modern day health problem) we also chose supplements for their ability to restore gut function, support anti-inflammatory pathways, and your body’s natural ability to detox.

1. The Binder

A comprehensive toxin binder that adheres to and facilitates your body’s natural removal of a wide array of toxins from the body while promoting gut health and friendly flora.

2. D3 5000/K2 150

Supports a healthy immune system and inflammatory response which is crucial when your body and immune system are undergoing the stressful, inflammatory attack of a parasitic infection.

3. Desmodium Molliculum + Pimpinella

To encourage your body’s own ability to detox during this cleanse, this supplement offers vital support to your entire detoxification system including your liver, kidneys, and lymphatic system due to its role as an antiviral, antimicrobial, and anti-inflammatory.

4. Cat’s Claw

This next-level extract has been found to have antibacterial, antimicrobial, antiviral, and antiparasitic properties. This, combined with its role as an anti- inflammatory and immune system modulator, Cat’s Claw plays an essential role in the fight against parasites.

5. Methyl Complex

Promotes the body’s natural process of DNA methylation, supports healthy methylation pathways, and plays a vital role in the efficient functioning of folate and methionine cycles.

6. Otoba Parvifolia

A common supplement used to fight chronic Borrelia burgdorferi and other co-infections in Lyme disease, research has touted this extract as a powerful antiviral, antibacterial, antiparasitic, anti-inflammatory, and antiprotozoal.

7. Elecampane + Jalap

This specially formulated blend of two extracts, Elecampane and Jalap, contains antiparasitic and antibacterial compounds that have been shown in studies to be beneficial in treating various parasites such as threadworm, roundworm, whipworm, hookworm, and Babesia — a parasite linked to Lyme disease.

8. Serrapeptase + Inulin

Works as a biofilm disruptor and supports the immune system’s elimination of harmful microbes.

9. Magnesium Malate

Magnesium is essential for every cell in your body and supports healthy cardiovascular, muscle, nerve, bone, and cellular function including energy production in your mitochondria — the powerhouse of your cell. There are many forms of magnesium on the market, but research supports Magnesium Malate’s enhanced bioavailability.
