We've been doing these more intimate solo episodes you all have been asking for, and I wanted to keep going with something I couldn't fully unpack in my latest book, Heal Your Cells. A few weeks back I did a solo episode giving you the behind-the-scenes of why I wrote Heal Your Cells with my friend and co-author Dr. Josh Axe - the loss of my dad, my own burnout spiral, and how I ended up having to become my own patient. If you haven't listened to that one yet, go back and check it out, along with the round table conversation Dr. Axe, our friend Dylan Gemelli, and I did around the book's release.

Today I wanted to get into the actual science: why cellular health is the through-line behind almost every chronic condition we're seeing rise right now, from autoimmunity to fertility issues to brain fog. There's a whole field of research, a lot of it out of Harvard and Dr. David Sinclair's lab, that frames aging through what's called the information theory of aging. Every cell has this pristine, God-given code in its DNA, and modern life is essentially scratching that code - creating what I call cellular confusion. Your cell forgets what it's supposed to be.

One of the mechanisms I dig into is the cell danger response, and how it can't tell the difference between a physical threat and an emotional one. When your cells are stuck in that protective, confused state, the byproducts of energy production can't get cleared out. I know it's a weird analogy, but I call it cellular constipation - when you don't feel good, chances are your cells are backed up. That's the soundbite of this episode, and I mean it.

From there I walk through what I'm calling the Inflammatory Core Four: added sugar outside its whole-food form, industrial seed oils, gluten-containing grains, and conventional dairy - plus alcohol as a fifth, if I'm being honest. I try to give real nuance here, especially on seed oils, because that conversation has gotten so polarized. Context matters - a little organic, cold-pressed sunflower oil in an otherwise whole-food diet is a very different thing than a diet built on ultra-processed PUFAs. I also circle back to the Vital Farms egg conversation we covered in a past Ask Me Anything, because I think it's a good example of health information getting overcorrected into fear.

The part I want people to sit with most, though, is xenohormesis - the idea that plants that have gone through stress make deeply colored, bitter, polyphenol-rich compounds, and when we eat them, they teach our cells to become more resilient. It's basically a cellular boot camp. Pair that with fasting and time-restricted eating, and you're activating AMPK, autophagy, mitophagy, and your sirtuins — the guardian angels of the cell, if you will -so your body can finally clean house. This is the science underneath everything I talk about in Heal Your Cells, and I wanted to give you the deep dive I didn't have the word count for in the book.

A few of my favorite things we cover in this episode:

  • Why these solo deep-dive episodes are back, and what's coming in the series
  • The information theory of aging: DNA as "pristine code," and cells losing the signal
  • Cellular confusion explained: the cell danger response and evolutionary mismatch
  • Leaky mitochondria and "cellular constipation": waste that can't get out of the cell
  • The Inflammatory Core Four: sugar, seed oils, grains, and dairy (plus alcohol as a fifth)
  • Added sugar and advanced glycation end products oxidizing the cell membrane
  • Seed oils, omega-6 overload, and the nuance lost in the "seed oil wars"
  • The Vital Farms/PUFA egg controversy, revisited with more context
  • mTOR run wild: the soundbite of the episode, "your cells are constipated"
  • Xenohormesis: how stressed plants (polyphenols, bitterness, deep color) build cellular resilience
  • The hormesis myth: the poisoned king story behind "the dose makes the medicine"
  • AMPK, autophagy, and mitophagy: the body's built-in cellular cleanup crew
  • Healthy fats and C15: why cell membranes need diverse, whole-food fat
  • Fasting, chronobiology, sirtuins, and senolytics: when you eat matters as much as what
