Three questions in this AMA. Each one went somewhere useful.
The first was about multivitamins — specifically, whether they're worth the money or whether targeted supplements are a better use of resources. The honest answer is: it depends. If your food is already intentional and nutrient-dense, a well-chosen targeted supplement addressing your actual deficiencies is probably going to move the needle more. But if you're busy, traveling, or not eating with consistent intention, a high-quality multivitamin with methylated B vitamins, choline, and meaningful (not token) doses of key nutrients has solid research behind it. The COSMOS Trial showed what amounted to a three-year reversal in cognitive decline with consistent use. The Physician's Health Study showed an 8% reduction in total cancer incidence. That's not nothing. The caveat is always: you are not what you supplement with, you are what you absorb — which is why third-party testing and bioavailable forms matter more than the milligram count.
The second question was from Natalie, who has over twelve fibroids, several of significant size, and an OB recommending hysterectomy. This is a question we get often, and the functional medicine approach goes straight to root cause: insulin resistance, estrogen dominance, xenoestrogens from plastics and PFAs, and the MED12 gene variant found in 70% of fibroid cases. The research on specific flavonoids here is genuinely impressive. EGCG from green tea extract showed over 32% improvement in both bleeding and symptom severity in a randomized controlled trial. Curcumin at 1.2 grams daily showed a 60% reduction in tumor growth over six months. Berberine — which aligns mechanistically with the insulin resistance connection — showed an 85% reduction in fibroid tumor size in a mouse study. Quercetin, luteolin (highest in dried oregano), apigenin (highest in parsley and chamomile). These are not fringe ideas. They're compellingly researched, and the answer is to get enough of them — from food and from standardized doses in supplements — and support liver detoxification of excess estrogens while addressing the hormonal and metabolic root causes underneath.
The third question was from Sierra, who found biomagnetism helpful for EBV and wanted to know if it was compatible with the tirzepatide her friends were suggesting. This turned into a broader conversation about what happens when a practitioner becomes so committed to one modality that everything outside it is disqualified — and whether that commitment is serving the patient or protecting the practitioner. Biomagnetism has almost no peer-reviewed literature behind it. It might help. It has no meaningful risk. But when a biomagnetism doctor says "absolutely not" to tirzepatide without engaging with why someone is considering it — when there's growing evidence of GLP-1's off-label benefits for autoimmunity and inflammation — it's worth asking whose interests that "absolutely not" is serving.
A few of my favorite things we cover in this episode:
- Multivitamins: the COSMOS Trial showing a reversal of three years of cognitive decline with consistent use, and the Physician's Health Study showing an 8% reduction in total cancer incidence
- When a multivitamin makes sense vs. when food-as-medicine and targeted supplementation wins — and why you're not just what you eat, you're what you absorb
- What to look for in a quality multivitamin: methylated B vitamins (methylfolate, methylcobalamin, P5P), choline for neuroprotection, third-party testing, and no mega-doses of things you don't need
- Why highlighter-yellow pee from B vitamins is normal — not a sign of toxicity
- Fibroids: the most common tumor in women — 80% of women have them by 50, most without knowing
- Root causes of fibroids: insulin resistance, estrogen dominance, xenoestrogens, the MED12 gene variant (in 70% of cases), and why plastics and PFAs are gasoline on the fire
- EGCG (green tea extract): 32.4% improvement in bleeding and 32.6% improvement in symptom severity in an RCT over four months
- Curcumin at 1.2g/day: 60% reduction in tumor growth over six months
- Berberine: 85% reduction in fibroid tumor size (mouse study) — aligns with the insulin resistance connection
- Quercetin, luteolin, apigenin — the flavonoid family showing fibroid-reducing effects in studies
- Vitamin D3 optimization (60-80 on labs) slowing fibroid proliferation
- Both/and vs. either/or: when surgery is sometimes needed AND root causes still need to be addressed
- Biomagnetism: founded by Dr. Duran in Mexico in the 1980s — muscle testing, applied kinesiology, opposite polarity magnets on biomagnetic pairs to shift pH
- The problem with being a wellness purist: when all you have is a hammer, everything looks like a nail
- When a practitioner's "absolutely not" to tirzepatide becomes a red flag — whose interests are being served?
- Sip of the Summer Round 3: Bloom Rocket Blast Pop vs. Bubly sparkling water, Waterloo lemon lime + cherry juice mixer, and Dr. Cole's Live120 pomegranate mocktail from the Equinox Hotel
