If you've ever stood in the pet food aisle and wondered whether any of this was actually good for your dog or cat - this conversation is going to be a lot to sit with.
I sat down with Dr. Judy Morgan, who spent over 40 years in veterinary medicine, the first 10 of which were entirely conventional before a chiropractic course and a German Shepherd who walked in paralyzed and ran out of her clinic changed everything. She has written nine books, built a platform that reaches millions of pet owners, and has been called every variation of a voodoo practitioner by the traditional veterinary industry. She wears it well.
The numbers she opens with are hard to move past. Three in four dogs who reach age 10 will be diagnosed with cancer. The average lifespan of a golden retriever was 17 years in the 1970s. It is now 10. We are doing something wrong, and the conversation about what that is starts with food. The kibble most people feed their pets is, in her words, fast food - extruded, highly processed, filled with synthetic dyes and preservatives that aren't allowed in the human food industry, and made from rendered ingredients that can include cancerous tissue, euthanized animals, and moldy corn that gets fumigated with additional chemicals before it enters the bag. A keynote speaker at a national food control meeting - the head of one of the country's largest rendering companies - reportedly said it is virtually impossible to produce rendered meal without pentobarbital (euthanasia solution) in it. And the FDA's position is that the amount isn't high enough to cause a problem. Dr. Morgan's position is that any amount is too much.
We also went deep on vaccines - most core vaccines last a lifetime and titer testing can tell you whether immunity exists before you vaccinate again, but the card that comes in the mail still says Fluffy's shots are due. On flea and tick pesticides - they don't repel, they require a bite, and class-action lawsuits are now underway for the isoxazoline class after hundreds of thousands of adverse event reports. And on spay/neuter timing - neutering a six-month-old dog is the hormonal equivalent of making a young woman postmenopausal overnight, and the Scandinavian countries, where it's illegal without medical reason, have better longevity outcomes as a result. This is the conversation your vet probably isn't having with you, and it's one you need to hear.
A few of my favorite things we cover in this episode:
- How a chiropractic course and a 95-pound German Shepherd who ran down the hallway changed Dr. Morgan's entire practice
- 3 in 4 dogs who reach age 10 will receive a cancer diagnosis - and the average lifespan of a golden retriever has dropped from 17 years to 10
- Spaying and neutering before 6 months: why it's essentially making a dog postmenopausal overnight - and what the Scandinavian model shows instead
- Annual vaccination myth-busting: most core vaccines last a lifetime, and titer testing tells you whether immunity actually exists before you vaccinate again
- Flea and tick pesticides are neurotoxins - they don't repel, they require the tick or flea to bite first - and French rivers are contaminated with fipronil from topical pet treatments
- What's actually in conventional kibble: rendered "meat meal" from euthanized animals, cancerous tissue, aflatoxins from moldy corn, BHA/BHT preservatives banned in human food, and dyes your pet can't even see
- Cats are obligate carnivores - kibble is 50%+ carbohydrates and why that's driving the epidemic of obese, diabetic cats
- The raw and gently cooked food revolution that's terrifying the big pet food companies
- Traditional Chinese Veterinary Medicine food therapy: the five element constitutions for pets (and humans) - wood, fire, earth, metal, water
- Deer antler velvet, green lipped mussels, functional mushrooms (reishi, cordyceps, lion's mane), and colostrum as standout pet supplements
- Vitamin D deficiency is widespread in pets - and human-dose supplements can cause kidney failure
- Bone broth and congee for digestive upset: the fasting and gentle refeeding protocol
- Monkey's House: the dog hospice in New Jersey where terminal dogs from high-kill shelters routinely outlive their prognoses by years
