If you've ever had a doctor glance at your liver enzymes, tell you they're "a little elevated" and then move on - this episode is going to feel like someone finally turning the lights on.

I sat down with Dr. Joshua Levitt, naturopathic physician and co-founder of UpWellness, for one of the most genuinely satisfying conversations I've had about an organ that does everything and almost never gets the credit it deserves. We talk about the liver like it's just a filter. It isn't. It manages your hormones, produces bile for digestion, runs phase one and phase two detoxification through systems like the cytochrome P450 pathway, and - here's the one that stopped me - it has a direct, well-documented connection to mental health. The word melancholy, literally translated, means "black bile." Ancient medicine knew the liver-mood link long before we did.

Dr. Levitt also does something I really appreciate: he debunks the liver flush clearly and kindly. He shares the story of a patient with gallstones who insisted on doing an olive oil and apple juice cleanse against medical advice - and then had the ultrasound afterward to prove the "expelled stones" were soap stones made from the flush itself, not actual gallstones. The real gallstones were still there. The story is both funny and clarifying. Because the goal isn't to purge - it's to gently, daily support the enzymatic pathways that are working hard in a world that has made their job significantly harder. We get into the specific compounds that do exactly that: taurine, milk thistle, NAC, dandelion root, schisandra berry. Each one with a mechanism, not just a claim.

We also talked about alcohol (his answer is more nuanced and honest than most), coffee as legitimate liver medicine, and why ordering bitters and soda at a bar might be one of the most underrated functional health moves out there. And if you've been walking past dandelions in your yard and reaching for the herbicide - Dr. Levitt has something to say to you about that. Your liver might too.

A few of my favorite things we cover in this episode:

  • Why the liver is the body's most underrated organ - and what it's actually doing beyond "filtering"
  • The liver flush myth debunked (including the gallstone story that proved it on ultrasound)
  • Phase one and phase two detoxification - what liver "support" actually means
  • Fatty liver, insulin resistance, and the standard American diet connection
  • How to read liver enzymes on standard labs before things get serious
  • The liver-mental health link: why "melancholy" literally means "black bile"
  • Top liver-supportive compounds: taurine, milk thistle, dandelion root, NAC, schisandra
  • Alcohol, coffee, and digestive bitters - the honest answers
  • Dr. Levitt's Tres Cosas practice: the weekly "three good things" email to his family
