I didn't know much about human design going into this conversation. I knew I'd had a session done years ago and that I'm a manifesting generator - and that it resonated in a way that felt uncomfortably accurate. But I hadn't gone deeper on it until Emma Dunwoody walked me through the whole picture, and by the end of the conversation I was genuinely asking how I hadn't spent more time here.

Emma came to this work the hard way. At 28 she was diagnosed with depression and panic disorder, dragged herself to a specialist's office because she was afraid her thoughts of suicide might become actions, and was told this was something she'd learn to manage - not something she'd heal from. Her response, characteristically, was: if you can just tell me how I got here, I'm pretty confident I can get out. That belief, and the decade-long journey that followed - through behavioral coaching, the Camino (twice), and eventually a completely chance encounter with a human design practitioner 10 minutes from her house - is the backstory to one of the more grounded and precise frameworks I've heard for understanding why we do what we do.

Human design sits beneath personality tests like the Enneagram or Myers-Briggs. Those tools show you who you think you are. Human design, Emma explains, is the energetic blueprint underneath - how you're designed to manage energy, how you make decisions best, what burns you out, what lights you up, and what you came here to do. There are five types: manifestors, generators, manifesting generators, projectors, and reflectors. There are 200 incarnation crosses. There are over two billion possible expressions of the chart. And the piece that stuck with me most - there's an undefined spleen center that may explain why some people are far more vulnerable to autoimmune conditions and burnout than others, simply because they're absorbing and amplifying everyone else's energy all day without knowing it.

What I keep coming back to is the permission this gives people. Not permission to be lazy or to avoid growth, but permission to stop trying to fix what was never broken. To stop modeling someone else's strategy. To recognize that the thing you've been fighting your whole life might just be your greatest gift, expressed from fear rather than from love.

A few of my favorite things we cover in this episode:

  • Emma's diagnosis of depression and panic disorder at 28 - being told she'd never heal - and why that became the most important catalyst of her life
  • Walking the Camino de Santiago twice (800km across Spain) - what surrender, synchronicity, and "the Camino provides" actually means in practice
  • Human design explained: a synthesis of Western astrology, the Hindu chakra system, the Kabala Tree of Life, and the Chinese I Ching - sitting beneath Myers-Briggs and Enneagram as the energetic blueprint beneath personality
  • The 5 human design types: Manifestors (initiate), Generators (build), Manifesting Generators (hybrid multi-passionate), Projectors (improve and guide), Reflectors (reflect truth back)
  • Dr. Cole is a Manifesting Generator - what that actually means for how he makes decisions, why he does many things, and what functional burnout looks like for that type
  • Ra Uru Hu channeling human design over 8 days in Ibiza in 1988 - and why his own design (manifestor, Gate of Shock) explains everything about how and why he delivered it
  • Neutrinos: one of the smallest particles in the universe, studied in a $100 million Japanese facility - and how they carry celestial imprints at the moment of birth
  • The incarnation cross: 200 crosses, 2 billion+ expressions of the human design chart, and why type alone is just the macro container
  • Gene Keys by Richard Rudd - the feminine complement to human design: shadow, gift, and enlightened expression of each energy
  • Undefined spleen center and what it means for health, immunity, and why some people instinctively avoid hospitals
  • Parenting through human design: what happened when Emma gave her sons the freedom their designs required
  • Human design for nervous system regulation: why projectors and reflectors are more susceptible to burnout and autoimmune conditions
  • Power vs. Force by Dr. David Hawkins as a book that reframes everything happening in the world right now
