The Low-Tox Home Masterclass Every Family Needs | Nicole Jaques

There's a specific kind of overwhelm that comes with the wellness space, and Nicole Jaques knows exactly what it looks like — because she's built an entire platform on dismantling it. The premise of everything she does is simple: one room, one swap, one step at a time. Not perfection. Not a complete life overhaul. Just the next thing.
Nicole was diagnosed with eosinophilic esophagitis — EoE — under unusual circumstances. She was eating a salad by the pool on vacation, relaxed, low-cortisol, unbothered. She took a bite and couldn't breathe. She was rushed to the ER, where a food bolus had lodged in her esophagus and wouldn't dissolve on its own. She was scoped that night. The diagnosis felt like a one-off to the ER staff. It didn't feel that way to her. She went to Mayo Clinic in Florida. She waited nine months for a Stanford GI appointment. She did the research. And in the middle of all of it, a Stanford doctor looked at her and said the thing she needed to hear and nobody had said before: stop drinking alcohol. She stopped. Her inflammation dropped dramatically. And she never went back.
The conversation that follows is essentially a practical masterclass. We go room by room — kitchen, laundry, bathroom, bedroom — and Nicole walks through the highest-leverage swaps in each one, backed by her own third-party testing. Not guesswork. She buys the products, she sends them to labs, and she publishes the results. The carbon steel griddle from Made In that replaced seven things in her kitchen. The dishwasher filter you've never cleaned but need to every month. The four Blueland tabs that clean better than two. The reason she recommends moving your washer and dryer outside the house if at all possible. The clothespin on the wool dryer ball that solves the static problem everyone complains about. The reason your mattress tells you to "air it out before sleeping" — which is essentially the manufacturer telling you what's in it and why you probably shouldn't be sleeping on it. The synthetic fragrance applied to your wrist and neck — the exact same transdermal mechanism that's being used to deliver hormone therapy to perimenopausal women, with none of the healthcare oversight.
What I appreciate most is what she said at the end. Everyone's low-tox looks different. She bleaches her hair. She detoxes afterward. She doesn't do Botox because her body rejects it. She doesn't drink alcohol. She eats eggs from a neighbor's chickens and they don't make her mouth tingle like store-bought ones do. This is not a one-size-fits-all conversation. It's an invitation to get curious about your own home, your own body, and what it's actually telling you.
A few of my favorite things we cover in this episode:
- Choking on a salad by the pool on vacation — and how a food bolus stuck in her esophagus led to an EoE diagnosis she was told to just medicate for life
- Allostatic load as the true trigger: post-COVID stress, Type A personality, running a business and a home simultaneously — and the body saying "enough"
- Why a Stanford GI specialist telling her to stop drinking alcohol was the most important medical advice she ever got — and why she never looked back
- Alcohol's dirty underbelly: it's unregulated, unlabeled, and stays in your system for 72 hours — and the memory and inflammation implications nobody talks about
- Eggs and dairy in Europe vs. the US: eating freely abroad without symptoms, because it was never the egg — it was the soy the chicken was fed
- A2 dairy, duck eggs, quail eggs, and microdosing reintroduction for a hypervigilant immune system
- Moon Bird for kids: what it is, how it works, and why her 8 and 10-year-old can now regulate their own nervous systems without it
- Low-tox living defined: treating your home the same way you'd treat your body — holistically, one system at a time
- Kitchen: Teflon and non-stick myth (ceramic coating included), Made In stainless steel + Lodge cast iron + carbon steel griddle, Blueland dish tabs (4 not 1-2), cleaning the dishwasher filter you've never cleaned
- Laundry room: put the washer and dryer outside if possible — they fumigate right back into the house. Dryer sheet-free forever. Wool dryer ball + clothespin for static.
- Bathroom: synthetic fragrance applied to your wrist and neck is being absorbed transdermally — exactly the same mechanism as hormone patches. Typology tinted serum (France), Merit makeup, Rahua and Innersense for hair, Just Ingredients tooth powder
- Bedroom: why mattresses say "air out before sleeping" — and why that's them telling you what's in it. Birch Luxe and Avocado. Viscose bamboo sheets. Memory foam is a no.
- Carpet off-gases for up to 10 years — your feet are high absorbers and you're walking on it daily
- EMF: two things that matter most — remove devices from the bedroom and turn the Wi-Fi off at night
- Third-party testing her own money: why she tests everything, the Tom's/lead context, and why Hyah vitamins got unfairly attacked
- Quinton sea salt hydration ampoules in glass as the most underrated supplement she takes
- Her 2027 book: a cleaning cookbook with 60 DIY recipes and 7 grocery-store ingredients
