Pantry Beauty Queen: Natural Cosmetics Made From At-Home Items

Healing Through Loss: A Functional Medicine Perspective Dr. Will Cole

by Yvette Johnstone

In this day and age, toxins are a common occurrence in most everyone’s daily life. With autoimmune conditions on the rise, many of these toxins can actually trigger the onset of a condition. With this knowledge it is extremely important to be conscientious of what we are exposing ourselves to in the various products that we use.

For us women, a big piece of the toxin puzzle comes from our cosmetics. Most women use some form of makeup every single day. Not to mention the various other products we use such as hair products, lotions, fragrances, etc.

Fortunately, lots of these items can be made with nourishing ingredients that you may already have in your pantry at home! Making your own cosmetics is also extremely cost effective saving you valuable money that can be going towards other things – like clothes! Now who doesn’t love that?!

These are some of my favorite products that I use myself and I find just as effective, if not more so, than what I can get at a beauty or drugstore.

Coconut Body Lotion

This body lotion is super nourishing and leaves my skin feeling extremely soft. It is also great because you can change up the scents each batch depending on your mood and the season. Coconut oil can act as a great lotion on its own as well if you happen to run out of this before you have the chance to make another batch!

Ingredients

  • 1 cup solid, organic raw shea butter
  • 1/2 cup organic coconut oil
  • 1/2 cup almond oil (or another oil you like such as jojoba)
  • Essential oils of your choice for fragrance

Directions

  1. Melt shea butter and coconut oil, remove from heat, and let cool for 30 minutes.
  2. Mix in almond and essential oils.
  3. Place in freezer to chill.
  4. Once it begins to harden, use a handheld mixer to blend to desired consistency. Place in container to store.

Perfectly Simple Makeup Remover

This product is pure and simple with only ONE ingredient; you guessed it, coconut oil. Just use a cloth or cotton ball, dip in some coconut oil and remove. I have never used a makeup remover that works this well. In just a couple quick swipes my whole eye of makeup is completely gone!

Ingredients

  • Organic coconut oil

Skin Clearing Toner

Looking for a natural toner I started out using this from S.W. Basics. I absolutely loved it but realized I could make the same thing at home for a lot cheaper! This is an amazing toner that uses apple cider vinegar to balance out your skin’s natural PH levels and witch hazel to help fight acne. This is skin magic in a bottle.

Ingredients

  • 1 tbsp. organic witch hazel
  • 1 tbsp. organic raw apple cider vinegar
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 5 drops clary sage essential oil

Directions

  1. Mix well, adding the clary sage in last and mixing again.

Sweet Sugar Scrub

I don’t use this all the time but whenever I want to pamper myself or I feel like my skin needs a little extra exfoliation, I use this. It smells so delicious and is quick to make.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup organic brown sugar (cane sugar works as well)
  • 1/4 cup coconut oil
  • 2 tbsp. raw honey
  • Essential oils of your choice for fragrance

Directions

  1. Mix well and place in container to store.

Now these are just a few products that I use on a regular basis. However, there are so many more options for natural cosmetics. A great resource is Wellness Mama who has recipes from everything to hair masks, deodorant, chap-stick….the list goes on. Play around and discover a new favorite for your current product and let the detoxing for better health begin!
